• background First of, a little background information on Count Cain since it is a much lesser known series in English than Angel Sanctuary. In Japanese, the name of the series is "Hakushaku Cain Series" where Hakushaku means Count or Earl (British). I know this name has been translated into either Count Cain or Earl Cain and yes, technically it's England and they have Earls and not Counts, however I think Count Cain was the very first translated name of this series and it just stayed for me, as politically uncorrect as it is. I'm only acknowledging the fact here that it is wrong. This is the first long series which Yuki Kaori did and before this she had only published a few single short stories. It is also the series by which she made her name as an artist. The story is very dark and gothic yet very captivating and already showed her own original style. There were a total of five volumes published between the years 1992 - 1994 and they were really a collection of individual short stories all staring the main character Cain Hargreaves and tied together by a greater plot. However it is not one of those continuous storylines such as Angel Sanctuary. In 1994 when Yuki sensei deemed that she had enough support to carry out her long dreamed project of Angel Sanctuary, she stopped her work on Count Cain and went to do that instead. She was able to do this mainly because Cain was all short stories and although much was left hanging open, it wasn't necessarily "to be continued". She did promise then that she would go back to it once AS was completed. Certainly all the English speaking readers knew her first by AS but many Japanese and Chinese readers were very sad to see her drop Cain and loved it even more than Angel Sanctuary. The only language those first five volumes of the Cain Series had been translated into is Chinese although I have seen some online fan translation for them as well, though it might not be for all of them. Now as time passed, Angel Sanctuary closed and Yuki Kaori kept her promise and returned to working on Count Cain. This is the series that she is currently publishing in the bi-weekly magazine Hana to Yume, but since there is almost seven years of difference, her art has greatly changed in that time and became even more beautiful. The old Count Cain Series obviously didn't look as good as AS but this new chapter which she calls God Child simply looks incredible and the story for the greater plot is also unfolding page by page before our eyes. For this however, I do not think there are any translations available for now, even in Chinese (I haven't been told about any volumes published). I would dearly like to translate this myself but *cough* I'll finish AS first.
